The author is anti-gay, and bugger refers to sodomization.

I don't know this for a fact, but most likely they called them "Formics" because "bugger" is a British swear word. Rather than try to explain (or get a higher rating in certain countries), they just avoided the issue entirely. That's the only explanation I can think of, anyway.

I am confused ... I have been looking for the reason they changed "Buggers" to "Formics". I know what I saw at the theaters vs dvd. I have been waiting for this movie since I first read it in high school and have read 9 times since then!! So I paid special attention to everything! A detail like that would've been fine, but the book has the kids literally taking over the world philosophy and politics and being taken seriously through what boils down to anonymous blogging, and OSC spends thousands of words trying to justify it. If that's not ridiculous, I don't know what is.

The "kids conquer the world via blogging" subplot is left out? That's definitely an improvement. That's the part that made me stop reading the book because of how stupid it was.
