This Spoils the Ending
In the Book In the Movie
The book is told through a variety of mediums - journal, interview etc. Little however, from the sister. The movie is narrated by the sister. All Chris's perspective.
The author of the book actually gives his personal opions on the man he has never met and includes stories of his own adventure. The story sticks to Chris.
The book goes into details which Chris would not have known - for example, why the bus was there and that Chris's abandoned car was eventually used in undercover drug operations. Sticks to what happened with Chris.
The book goes into detail of Chris's childhood, highlighting events that show him as questioning society. Starts with college graduation.
Tracy is barely mentioned - she is just a girl that has a crush. Expended including attempted seduction.
Paints Chris as more abrasive. Ranting against authority when confronted. He replies rather abrasively, for example to the need for a hunting license. Chris is pretty easy going. An added scene is when he wants to raft down the Colorado River, he finds a way, peacefully, to find his own way.
These two did not exist. After rafting down the river he meets two Swedish people.
Portrayed more darkly. Portrayed as a hero.
   Fantastic soundtrack by Eddie Vedder.
The book details stories of others who have gone into the wild and never returned. Sticks to Chris's story.
Chris takes a second trip to South Dakota, actually working for Wayne twice. Merged into one trip.
Chris works at Burger King Chris works at McDonalds
Chris shows no interests in women Chris has a girlfriend
Chris uses a canoe Chris uses a kayak
The book does not give a cause of death but guesses. The movie makes it seem as though it was the poison berries, as well as calm and beautiful.
Goes into after, such as a trip to the bus by Chris's family, and what happened to some of the people he had met. Ends with Chris's death.
